This is odd.
I'm going to be a little sober today, at least for now, and just vent about something that's been on my mind. Sixty or so years ago, we had a couple madman to our east, who we had to head into Africa then march north to stop. Around the same time, someone from the general orient decided to attack us from the west, to reclaim some land.
It's 2003. Troops are marchind north through the middle east to stop a genocidal madman. A world leader in the general orient is ready to attack us from the west to reclaim some land.
Yes, I
am over simplifying things to some degree. They were a lot more complex in the 1930s and 1940s. They're a lot more complex now. This leads perfectly into my rant, however.
It's very uncomfortable being in support of the war on Iraq. First, it's hard to tell how many people are against it when those who are keep throwing fits. I mean, a
vomit-in? When speaking with someone who opposes the war, I almost always feel that I've done more study into the situation. For every bit of finger pointing at the US government, I've almost always read enough to further explain why.
Oil? Not really. Russia wanted to sell to us and sell arms to Iraq. France wanted to buy oil from Iraq.
Unpopular administration? I fail to see where this is Bush's fault. Congress obviously voted for this war, but has been working against him in terms of domestic policies.
Maybe what the protestors need is a good taste of their own medicine. Maybe people need to walk around with clothespins on their noses to protest the stink of half truth, pacculi, and unwashed bodies.
I'm for a lot of the protestors, in all actuality. Whether they realize it or not, they've helped the people of Iraq
and the US government. It wasn't a perfect victory, but things would likely be much more grim without them. The feeling I get, though, is that in feeling like America and its values are being protected, I also feel as though those who benefit most from the privelages are taking away from we who are glad to see them defended.
So, don't listen to me. I oversimplify. Don't listen to the guys on MtV, or on the "we're not mtv" underground label. Pick up some history books - more than one - go to a wider variety of news sites, and make up your own mind. I'm kind of sick of seeing this whole thing turn into yet another fashion statement.
